A Heart for Africa

When I was 17 a flyer arrived in the mail addressed to me from Word of Life Bible institute announcing their summer short term missions trips. As I opened that tri-fold flyer, there in the center was a trip to South Africa and in the bottom right hand corner this verse:

Romans 10: 14-15

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?[a] And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

And God said to me, ‘I need you to GO to Africa!’

It was on that trip that God planted a love for Africa deep in my heart. As we were preparing to leave to head back to America, after eighteen amazing days of serving, sharing, loving and learning, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt I would someday return to Africa.

In the blink of an eye seventeen years passed and while packing to move I came across my journals from South Africa. As I reminisced and thanked God for my experience there I promised Him the next time the church went to Africa I would go. The very next night at choir the 2017 trip to Kenya was announced and he said GO!

As we planed and prepared my preconceived notions of what this trip would be were so far exceeded. In fourteen short days strangers became family, joy, hope, and the love of Christ were found nestled within a forgotten people and the amazing work of MOHI changing lives and growing the Kingdom of God left me changed forever. This heart for Africa, that God had sparked seventeen years earlier, was now forever bonded with friends halfway across the world. I didn’t want to leave. I knew I would be back. You can’t stay long away from a piece of your heart!

In 2018 I had the privilege of leading the team from Blackhawk and returning to The Mathare valley. As we returned to the Area 2 school I was overwhelmed to hear a small voice sing out Kaay-Teee!! These beauties who had stolen my heart remembered my name! They remembered the songs we had taught them. They sang out Joshua 1:9! Relationships with teachers, social workers and discipleship officers grew deeper. Hearts and lives were changed and before our time drew to a close we were planning our return.

I can hardly wait for February 2020!

Would you join us in prayer as our team prepares and raises our support? Pray that we would have open hearts for the work God has ordained. Pray for the hearts of those who we will encounter. Pray that God would knit our team together for His glory. Pray that God would provide for all of our needs; financial, physical, and spiritual. I cannot express what I means to know we have your support!!
